Topic: the megaregion concept was developed in response to the recognition of the growing interdependence of economic and social networks around the world. The concept addresses several key issues including urban competiveness in a globalized economy, territorial identity, sustainable development, transportation infrastructures, social equity and spatial justice. Proponents of the concept argue that megaregions, not cities, are best positioned to support economic development and invest in large scale infrastructure projects such as transportation that cross regional and national borders.
Three summer symposiums will address topics related to the megaregion:
Summer 2011 symposium in Quebec City
Summer 2012 symposium in Barcelona and Dublin
Summer 2013 symposium in Vancouver
